Joint Stress Mode also visualized block collisions and breaks, and Advanced Building Mode enabled value fields by default.
  • Machine workflow: Machine Autosave added customizable save limits and storage duration, while Additive Loading allowed multiple saved or workshop machines to be loaded without deleting the existing build. Paint Bucket search and sorting, Camera Snapping, Orthographic View, and directional readings for the Speedometer expanded the construction toolkit.
  • Simulation and editor updates: Zone 36: The Frozen Path received adjusted wind strength, and humanoid AIs gained drowning poses. Piston, Rope & Winch, Grenade, and Flying Block received new sounds, while High Quality SSAO became sharper.
  • Technical changes: Key Emulation was optimized for ticks with many key or variable uses, and blocks using Dials and Levers received rendering optimizations. Leaderboards were disabled indefinitely on M-core Macs after integration-related crashes.

Year 5

Feb 18, 2024 - Feb 18, 2025

70 changes

The Splintered Sea expansion launched on May 24, 2024, bringing Besiege its first water-focused campaign, an ocean sandbox, eight aquatic blocks, and hydrodynamic machine building. Its July extension added five more campaign levels, while Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4/5 releases broadened access later in the year.

  • The Splintered Sea: The expansion added a substantial new building and exploration space.
    • The Seas of Autilis: A 10-level campaign followed the Offlanders and their shipbuilding expertise.
    • Ocean Sandbox: The new environment included a calm racing zone, a Galleon battle, underwater ruins, marine life, and ancient-beast remains.
    • Aquatic Blocks: Sail Panel, Aquatic Screw, Paddle, Rudder, Harpoon Launcher, Small Barrel, Large Barrel, and Ballast blocks enabled purpose-built watercraft.
  • Campaign expansion: The Splintered Sea grew to 15 levels in July, adding optional challenges, the tentacled Tentacle Beast, and a giant shark encounter. Existing campaign levels also received revisions, while Tolbrynd’s final level was later redesigned.
  • Water simulation: Water Simulation introduced waves, wakes, splashes, buoyancy values, shape-dependent drag, and underwater explosive effects. The Center of Buoyancy visualization, customizable Barrel blocks, and heavier Ballasts gave builders more control over stability and balance; water also became available in Multiplayer and the Level Editor for expansion owners.
  • January 2025 update: Legacy Sandbox returned with refreshed models, textures, and a larger environment, alongside 25 new achievements, Global Leaderboards tracking time, damage, and block score, and campaign rulers who joined the final levels of their islands.
  • Console releases: Nintendo Switch launched in September with touch-screen building controls, and Besiege reached Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4/5 in Asia in December. The console versions did not include Multiplayer or the Level Editor.

The Edge Detector Logic Gate arrived in Besiege’s January 2024 update, giving machine builders a new way to react to edge conditions. The update also changed wheel collider and acceleration mechanics and delivered major Surface Block and Vacuum Block performance improvements, alongside new modding hooks and construction controls.

  • New construction logic: The Edge Detector Logic Gate was added, while the Decoupler worked correctly with Automation instead of failing to trigger.
  • Wheel and weapon mechanics: Wheel Collider and Acceleration Mechanics were updated with a slightly rounder collider and new acceleration behavior affecting deceleration. New Wheels grounded properly again, and Steam Cannons were fixed.
  • Simulation and building tools:
    • Surface Block simulation start times decreased significantly.
    • Vacuum Block used a more reliable, performant cone of effect, and no longer affected blocks in reverse.
    • Camera Targeting and Movement gained updated targeting and zoom-dependent WASD movement.
    • Grabber Button controls allowed manual attachment and detachment when auto-grabbing was disabled.
    • Surface Block gained world-size texture tiling and rotation options.
    • Steering Hinges and Steering Blocks received adjustable tension sliders.
    • Ropes no longer suffered chopping trigger lag, while Drills stopped creating sparks when only the affected block spun and Logs had more consistent collisions.
  • Mod support: Mod Meshes became readable by default, and the Generate Colliders callback for Surface Block gave creators more control when generating custom colliders.
