The 4v4 matchmaking and map overhaul reshaped Block N Load with four new maps, shorter build times, and a new match structure. Cloud, Cannon, and Piggy Bank blocks joined the sandbox, while level 200 character progression added new milestone rewards.

  • New content: Cloud, Cannon, and Piggy Bank blocks introduced distinct functions, and the map contest winner received an exclusive block. Existing players also received a Toadman Crate containing a random new character or skin, or 3,000 Gold if they owned everything.
  • Match structure and progression: 4v4 matchmaking replaced the previous format, four new maps expanded the rotation, and build times were reduced. Character levels increased to 200, with rewards at levels 125, 150, and 200; Time Assault was removed.
  • Balance and economy: Character abilities and cooldowns received broad balancing adjustments. Gold and Dust rewards increased by 300%, bounty crate rates changed, and the Forcegate became cheaper but less durable.
  • Notable gameplay fixes: Thorn Bush behavior changed so players could shoot out while sharing damage with the block when firing back. Daily Challenges involving the Spawn block and Large Bomb also received corrections.

Year 3

Apr 30, 2017 - Apr 30, 2018

64 changes

Block Progression System Overhaul was the biggest gameplay change, capping every block at 10 levels and revising Gold and Dust requirements. The same February update added new Block Skins, while February’s combat pass reshaped the Block Buster and several hero weapons and abilities.

  • Block Levelling and Bounty Blocks: The Block Levelling system capped all blocks at level 10, adjusted Gold and Dust costs, and revised Bounty Block item, Gold, and Dust rewards.
  • Block Skins and the shop: New skins arrived for Alien Glue, First Aid, Golden Gear, Brass Radar, Baroque, and Doc Eliza’s Heal Station. The shop also added six Gold boosters under the “doublers” tab and adjusted prices for Heroes, Hero Skins, and Perks.
  • Combat balance: The Block Buster could only take damage from tools and received reduced hit points. Vander Graaf’s Lightning Cage dealt damage less often, Astarella’s Saucer Launcher lost one round of clip capacity, Trondson’s Sonic Staff regenerated ammunition more slowly, and Sweet Science’s Graviton Stance reloaded more slowly; Tony Turetto’s Glue Gun, Yury the Yeti’s Snowball, and several hero perks received compensating changes.
  • Reliability fixes: A severe issue that sent all players back to the lobby was resolved, alongside corrections for Vander Graaf’s “Ball to the Wall,” Kira-chan’s “Thrills for Days,” and Yury the Yeti’s “Chill, Dude” perks. Custom Games also regained reliable rejoining and Workshop map use.

Year 2

Midsummer Madness delivered three contest-winning arenas—Beach Bash, Blocky Resort, and Cruise Boat—alongside Steam Workshop support for shortlisted maps. Ranked Beta also received a major structural overhaul, while hero abilities, building tools, and squad play saw substantial changes.

  • Midsummer Madness arenas: Beach Bash, Blocky Resort, and Cruise Boat joined Custom Games, with Castle Ruins, Sandcastle Wars, and Cloudy With a Chance of Summer 1.0 also becoming available through the Steam Workshop.
  • Ranked Beta and matchmaking: Classic mode split into Casual and Ranked Beta, which tested solo queues, level-30 entry requirements, and five-player squads. Squad Finder then helped players form teams from the Home and Play menus, while the Asia-Pacific server merge combined the Asia and Oceania regions.
  • New arenas and progression: Fort Argent entered Casual and Custom Games as a two-objective arena, while Block Skins became unlockable by leveling heroes to 10 and 50. Yury the Yeti, Cogwheel, Tony Turretto, Sarge Stone, and Kreepy the Klown rotated through the free-hero lineup.
  • Hero and block reworks: Vander Graaf’s Tesla Coil was reworked so Static Gloves charged networked coils instead of attacking directly, and Roly’s Hero Block began leaving Toxic Goo puddles. Balance passes also adjusted Sweet Science, Nigel Purdey-Longshott, O.P. “Juan” Shinobi, Kreepy the Klown, Kira-chan, Astarella, turrets, Force Gates, Rivet Gun, and the Slow effect.
  • Seasonal events and cosmetics: The Pumpkin Halloween arena returned, Kreepy the Jester and Gothi-chan joined the skin shop, and Yury the Yeti received the earnable Ghillie skin through the Winter Skin Event.

Free-to-play relaunch arrived on October 1, 2015, when Block N Load became free to play alongside a new progression, rewards, and perks structure and three heroes: Yuri, Kira, and Vander. The Map Editor then let players build fully playable arenas for Steam Workshop, while Ranked Beta separated competitive play from Casual.

  • Free-to-play progression: Gold Bars, Daily Challenges, and the Perks System added new reward and customization layers. The Hero Leveling overhaul raised the cap to 100, replaced Player Score with an uncapped XP curve, and rewarded progression with soft currency.
  • Player-created and challenge content:
    • Map Editor enabled fully playable arena creation and Steam Workshop sharing.
    • Time Assault introduced a single-player race across arenas, with Nigel added as a themed map.
    • Ablockalypse added an experimental mode with faster building, cheaper blocks, quicker abilities, and dedicated arenas including Insandity, High and Low, and Pillard.
  • Heroes and arenas: Dream Genie, Astarella, Roly Poly Fat Fat, and Kreepy the Klown expanded the playable roster.
    • Citadel, Bulwark, The Last Bastion, and Fun Factory joined Classic and Custom modes.
    • Shuko Style, Front Lines, Up ‘N Over, Search and Destroy, Kreepy’s Circus, Sky Bridge, Gate House, Blockageddon, and Duck And Cover broadened the arena lineup.
  • Ranked Beta: Classic split into Casual and Ranked Beta, with matchmaking ratings and tiers reset for the new competitive structure. League Points ranked Pro players and penalized quits in Gold and Pro tiers.
  • Combat and economy reworks: Base Cubes became vulnerable only to the melee tool and gained rechargeable shields, while World Blocks, Perks, respawn timers, and supply drops received major tuning. Roly Poly Fat Fat’s Toxic Goo added colored, depleting area denial through his revised weapons and abilities.
