Halloween Demo let prospective players sample the first three chapters of The Evil Within for free beginning October 30, 2014. The promotion also granted existing owners, and qualifying new purchasers, a free copy of Call of Cthulhu, while a PC update added long-requested display controls.
- Halloween Demo: The free demo covered the first three chapters of The Evil Within. Players who bought the game after trying it received Call of Cthulhu, and existing owners also received the bonus game.
- PC display options: The Letterbox setting allowed players to remove the cinematic bars, while Frame lock settings added selectable 30 FPS and 60 FPS caps. The update also addressed gameplay and visual issues caused by unlocked frame rates and removed letterboxing.
- Achievements and performance: The Power of Three unlocked correctly after upgrading the same weapon three times, and count-based achievement progress persisted when loading earlier saves. December’s performance optimizations also improved behavior on higher-end GPU systems.
