Year 12
Dec 15, 2025 - Sep 21, 2026
Lobby Stalling Prevention added server-side protections against players indefinitely holding up lobbies. The Gamemode Picker Update also made Coven modes available when every party member owned the Coven Expansion, while Chat Formatting Exploit Fix closed an exploit that hid usernames in messages.
- Lobby integrity: Lobby Stalling Prevention stopped players from stalling a lobby indefinitely through server-side protections.
- Coven party access: Coven Icon for Party Members marked party members who owned the Coven Expansion, and Gamemode Picker Update let fully eligible parties switch to Coven gamemodes.
- Chat security: Chat Formatting Exploit Fix prevented players from hiding their usernames inside chat messages.
Year 11
Dec 15, 2024 - Dec 15, 2025
Year 9
Dec 15, 2022 - Dec 15, 2023
Town of Salem itself had no verified player-facing content update captured. The major tracked milestones belonged to Town of Salem 2, which entered Early Access in May 2023 and reached full launch in August 2023, but those sequel releases were not changes to the original game.
- Original game: No named Town of Salem DLC, map, role, mode, balance overhaul, or seasonal event was verified in the supplied changes.
- Sequel boundary: Town of Salem 2 Early Access and Town of Salem 2 Official Release were separate-title launches and were therefore excluded from the original game’s update history.
- Scope: The tracked Town of Salem 2 content, including the Apocalypse faction, 52 Unique Roles, Harvest map, and Winter Wonderland map, did not count as updates to Town of Salem.
Year 7
Dec 15, 2020 - Dec 15, 2021
The Vigilante returned to the Town roles available in Coven Custom Game Mode. Other verified Town of Salem changes focused on Chat Filter Improvements, Facebook compatibility, and smaller maintenance updates rather than new modes, areas, or role additions.
- Coven Custom Game Mode: The Vigilante was restored to the Town role pool.
- Chat Filter Improvements: Chat, last wills, death notes, and notepads restricted allowed characters and symbols to prevent filter circumvention.
- Platform and maintenance: Facebook integration upgraded to Facebook for Unity SDK 9.2.0; Null Reference Exception Crash, the missing Coven lobby icon, and the incorrect Mafioso purchase display were fixed. Report Player Dialog replaced “Inappropriate Account Name” with “Leaving” as a report reason.
Year 6
Dec 15, 2019 - Dec 15, 2020
Town Traitor launched on May 28, 2020, adding a mode where one Town member secretly joined the enemy. Retributionist’s rework transformed its role in late-game play, while Ranked Season 5 brought a hard reset and a new Town-versus-Mafia role list.
-
Town Traitor: The new mode challenged players to identify the compromised Town member before the traitor’s faction took control.
-
Role reworks: Several roles received substantial mechanical changes.
- Retributionist raised dead Town members as minions for one night each.
- Amnesiac remembered unique Town roles, preventing those roles from being revived by Retributionist.
- Secondary targeting moved in-place controls to Retributionist, Necromancer, Transporter, Witch, and Coven Leader.
-
Ranked Season 5: The season began with a hard reset and a Town-versus-Mafia list without a Neutral Killing role. Guaranteed Witch, Mafia voting-majority protections, and further ranked-role-list adjustments addressed balance problems, while Ranked rewards added Merit Points and taunts for qualifying tiers.
-
Role balance: Several investigative, killing, and neutral roles changed significantly.
- Disguiser, Framer, and Forger gained stronger ways to manipulate investigative results, framing duration, and graveyard information.
- Juggernaut, Serial Killer, Werewolf, and Arsonist received buffs, including earlier Juggernaut defenses, Serial Killer’s Cautious ability, nightly Werewolf attacks after the fourth night, and passive Arsonist douses.
- Lookout saw its nightly visitor limit reduced to three, while Psychic abilities moved to alternate nights.
-
Player tools and presentation: Role Library added card-style role references, Player Statistics and Leaderboards provided a dedicated browsing tool, and Anonymous Voting became available in Custom games. The Chat Log gained player filtering, while Unity upgrades to 2019.2.20, 2019.4.14f1, and 2019.4.15f1 modernized the client underneath.
Year 5
Dec 15, 2018 - Dec 15, 2019
The Unity Update rebuilt Town of Salem in Unity on October 29, replacing the Flash-era client with a brighter interface, smoother performance, faster frame rates, 4K monitor support, and new in-game systems. It also delivered a built-in Notepad, improved targeting tools, environmental effects, and new end-game animations, while the earlier Steam beta prepared the transition.
- Unity overhaul: The Unity Update added redesigned menus with icons and tooltips, profile and account screens, targeting tabs, Friends Online indicators, toaster notifications, and map effects such as snow and cinders. The later Unity upgrade also improved Catalina compatibility and resolved a Citrix display problem.
- Gameplay tools: The Built-in Notepad let players record notes and send them to chat, while keyboard hotkeys opened the Last Will, Death Note, Notepad, and Chat Log. Trapper, Hex Master, Arsonist, and Poisoner received clearer status indicators, and inline Voting and Ability buttons streamlined targeting.
- Role rules and reliability: Witch defense information updated correctly after the first attack, while Necromancer self-attacks and attacks on fellow Coven members were prevented. Pirate could no longer plunder the same target on consecutive nights, and Medium and Guardian Angel abilities worked correctly after death in relevant cleaned or stoned cases.
- Cosmetics and rewards: New Mafioso, Coven Leader, and Tracker skins arrived alongside the 9 Tailed Fox pet. Necronomicon, Penguin, Potion Master, Toil and Trouble, and Coven Rises cosmetics became purchasable with Merit Points, while Premium users received 50 Cereneum tokens through the partnership with Cereneum.
- Language support: The Spanish User Interface reached completion after its final beta translation pass, giving Spanish-speaking players a fully localized interface.
Year 3
Dec 15, 2016 - Dec 15, 2017
The Coven Expansion was Town of Salem’s defining addition, bringing a witch faction, 15 roles, exclusive Coven queues, and rotating modes to the social-deduction lineup. It also introduced the Necronomicon, which amplified witch abilities from Night Four, while The Coven became purchasable for web users in July.
- Coven gameplay: Coven Ranked Practice arrived, and the Coven Leader became the Witch’s expanded counterpart. The Necronomicon went to the Coven on Night Four, with the Coven Leader receiving priority.
- New systems: Three additions changed how players learned and earned rewards.
- Cauldron System: Daily brews, Merit Points, free items, and a seventh-day reward created a new login-reward track.
- Tutorial System: Role-specific tips and first-game guidance helped new players learn without forcing particular actions.
- Taunts: Anonymous animations let players summon effects such as a dog, witch, or tombstone during games.
- Ranked seasons: Ranked Season 1 introduced placement matches and rewards based on Season High Rating. Ranked Season 2 followed an early Season 1 shutdown, resetting ratings to 1200 and wiping career-high statistics after a ranked exploit.
- Role balance: Several core roles received meaningful mechanical changes.
- Arsonist: Ignite became a passive attack that could kill jailed targets, while douses became silent and misled investigators.
- Spy: Bugging a player’s house revealed all actions performed on that player.
- Witch, Amnesiac, Vampire, and Bodyguard: These roles received new protection, remembering, attack, and protection-targeting rules.
- Localization: Town of Salem added Spanish localization, including separate UI and chat-language options.

- Rules and balance: The Investigator Results Rework changed investigative outcomes, while the Disguiser rework let the role disguise as another player’s role. The Witch learned the roles of controlled players, trials were limited to three per day, and the Executioner’s target rules changed around the Jailor and Spy.
- Competitive and player systems: Ranked Practice Mode reached mobile, and the Player Statistics Page and Leaderboards added performance tracking. The Leaver Buster System introduced escalating leave penalties that reset every seven days, while Mayor, Blackmailer, and Vampire received role-balancing adjustments.
- Seasonal and cosmetic additions: War-Torn Santa, Krampus, Santa’s Little Helper, and Blitzen arrived for the winter season, while the Angels & Demons set added Uriel, Cerberus, Infernal Portal, and lobby icons.
