In Viscera Cleanup Detail, you step into the boots of a space-station janitor tasked with cleaning up after various horrific sci-fi horror events. Instead of machineguns and plasma-rifles, your tools are a mop and bucket. That hero left a mess, and it's up to you to deal with the aftermath.

The Uprinsing level arrived as the major content drop, bringing the new Paint mechanic to Viscera Cleanup Detail. It also expanded janitor debris, added Acid-and-Paint interactions, and recalibrated speedrun targets across several maps.

  • Uprinsing: The new level introduced Paint splats, which required Acid jars to corrode them before efficient mopping. A randomized-on-spawn Janitor corpse debris class also joined the level toolkit. The December 19 follow-up fixed Acid and Paint behavior in saved games, invisible bullet holes, and difficult-to-hit or faint melted surface marks.
  • Gameplay systems: The Physics Quality setting made physics time-stepping adjustable, helping keep small objects from falling through bins and buckets. Incinerated Spartan Ammunition boxes fired in a straight direction, while Hydroponic Hell’s vending machine produced three seeds and vending machines produced up to five items. The Plopper gained three-axis object rotation through Shift plus the mouse buttons.
  • Speedrun balance: Par-times were reworked around the Ubermensch achievement. House of Horror dropped by 28%, while Shadow Warrior and Santa’s Rampage dropped by 10%; Caduceus, Gravity Drive, and Revolutionary Robotics also received shorter targets. Paintenance, Frostbite, Overgrowth, Unearthly Excavation, Cryogenesis, and Zero-G Therapy received longer targets.
  • Achievements and level polish: Mr. Two Million Dollars became obtainable without cleaning a level, and the RetryAchievementUnlocks command retriggered checks for Mr. Two Million Dollars and One Mop To Rule Them All. Janitor Office received a visual refresh, while Santa’s Rampage presents and Revolutionary Robotics sentry behavior saved or worked correctly.

Official OS X Build released on January 27, 2017, bringing Viscera Cleanup Detail’s PC gameplay and visuals to Mac. The port supported multiplayer through direct IP connections, but lacked Steam integration, cross-platform play, achievements, Steam Workshop access, and level reverb.

  • OS X release: The Mac version included the core PC feature set, although it defaulted to windowed mode and required a manual switch for fullscreen. Its multiplayer worked through direct IP rather than Steam networking, and the earlier OS X Demo had also confirmed that cross-platform play was unavailable.
  • Steam Workshop: Workshop cloud storage increased from 560 MB to approximately 1.2 GB, giving creators more room for submissions. The OS X build itself did not support Steam Workshop.
  • December update: Santa’s Rampage collectible achievements began rewarding all relevant players rather than only the host. The update also corrected P.I.D. name replacements, Janitor PDA controller input, and the splitscreen Escape Menu lock-up.
  • Controls and stability: Next Tool and Previous Tool received bindable controls in the Controls Menu, while improved Options navigation and color-swatch highlighting made menu use clearer. Reduced startup memory usage also helped address the “Ran out of Virtual Memory” crash.

Year 1

344 changes

The House of Horror DLC added a cursed suburban home and surrounding grounds to clean, along with new music, collectibles, and 10 achievements. Viscera Cleanup Detail v1.0 also ended Early Access, while Santa’s Rampage was merged into the main game.

  • House of Horror: The paid DLC introduced a full horror-themed map, six new horror radio songs through the free Soundtrack DLC, and the Head Hunter achievement line. The Woodchipper also became lethal to clumsy players.
  • Version 1.0 and new maps: Viscera Cleanup Detail v1.0 delivered the official release, while Santa’s Rampage, Frostbite, and Incubation Emergency expanded the playable map roster. Incubation Emergency added a longer three-hour cleanup scenario.
  • Workshop and progression systems: Custom Punchout Definitions let creators define what counted as mess and which notes appeared in reports. Official Content Only reduced Workshop dependency problems in multiplayer, and Trophy Backup created timestamped trophy saves after punch-outs. The Janitor Trunk collection and transfer systems were also overhauled to address duplicated or vanishing items.
    • Custom Punchout Definitions: Added more control over custom level scoring and report behavior.
    • Official Content Only: Let servers restrict sessions to official content.
    • Trophy Backup: Preserved earlier trophy states through punch-out backups.
  • Gameplay changes: Activate and Rotate behaviors were separated for held objects, allowing rotation without triggering an item. Santa’s Rampage Molotovs had to be lit before exploding, and Paintenance Tunnels greatly reduced the chance of players falling through floors.
  • Presentation and multiplayer: Overgrowth gained cascaded shadows across its plants, while Debriefing clarified whether a cleanup resulted in termination. The Kick Player menu, player name tags, and Level Inventory and Level Voice Controller settings also improved cooperative sessions and custom maps.
