299 changes

XCOM 2: War of the Chosen was the defining content drop, launching on August 29, 2017, for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The expansion added three resistance factions, the personal Chosen threat, The Lost, new enemies and environments, and systems such as Covert Actions, Resistance Orders, Soldier Bonds, and Challenge Mode.

  • Resistance factions: War of the Chosen added three recruitable soldier classes with distinct tactical identities.
    • Reapers used Shadow concealment, Vektor Rifles, and Claymores for stealth and ambushes.
    • Skirmishers used grappling hooks, Bullpup SMGs, Ripjacks, and extra-action abilities such as Battlelord.
    • Templars built Focus through kills and used psionic blades, Rend, Volt, and Ionic Storm.
  • Chosen and alien threats: The expansion made the Assassin, Hunter, and Warlock persistent nemeses who developed individualized strengths, weaknesses, agendas, and combat styles.
    • The Lost swarmed both XCOM and ADVENT, while headshots rewarded soldiers with free actions.
    • Spectres, ADVENT Purifiers, and ADVENT Priests added stealth, incendiary, and psionic threats to missions.
  • Strategy and progression: Covert Actions created non-combat missions for gathering intelligence, rescuing soldiers, hunting the Chosen, and earning rewards, while Resistance Orders provided faction-based strategic modifiers.
    • Soldier Bonds unlocked abilities including Teamwork, Spotter, and Dual Strike.
    • Ability Points and the Training Center expanded skill customization beyond a soldier’s normal class tree.
    • Exhaustion introduced Negative Traits, giving overused soldiers additional management concerns.
  • Challenge Mode and presentation: Challenge Mode added daily, time-limited missions with global leaderboards, replays, and scenarios involving unusual alien and faction squads. The Photobooth and Propaganda Center enabled custom resistance posters, while Resistance Radio and more than 10,000 new voice-over lines strengthened the expansion’s narrative presentation.
  • Balance: The October balance pass adjusted the Chosen’s procedural strengths and weaknesses, replaced the Reaper’s Executioner with Death Dealer, removed the Skirmisher’s Forward Operator, and restricted the Templar’s Ghost ability.
